Functions of Warehousing

Warehousing has constituted the intergral parts of logistics and supply chain management. It provides a central location for receiving, storing and distributing products. However, the paper focuses on the importance of warehousing in logistics. Effort will be made to review a book on Distribution at Activities of Marketing. Though, warehouse has a special design, location, and purposes, its ensures that goods, or freight are not exposed to external hazard / theft,  professional warehousing and services actually utilize advance applications and strategies to manage their stock and provides accurate insights of the inventory. Warehousing also provide enough space to store finished goods, inbound functions that prepare items for storage and outbound functions that consolidate, pack and ship orders accordingly. A specific design of warehousing determined the size of materials handling equipment that is suitable for keeping and moving stocks. Human effort cannot also be out of place when it comes to loading and unloading of goods, product within the warehouse. Finally, warehousing is setup and therefore has a great significance.

Warehouses are commercied building used for storage of goods. Manufacturers, importers, wholesectors, transporters, customs, third party logistics providers etc. they are usually large plain buildings in industrial paint of  horsn or adjacent areas. Warehouses are equipped with loading docks to load and unload thicks, or sometimes fed through railways, airports or sea ports. They also have cranes, forklifts for moving goods, which are  usually placed on 150 standard pallets (Chan, 2004).

Some warehouses are completely automated, with no involvement of manual work inside. The pallets and products are moved with a system of automated conveyors and automated storage and retrieve machines coordinated by a programmable logic controllers and computer. These systems are after installed in refrigerated warehouses where a very low temperature has to be maintained to keep the products from perishing.

Although traditional warehousing has been declining in the last decades of the 20th century with the gradual introduction of JIT just-in-time. JIT techniques was design to improve the retire on investment of a business by reducing in-process inventory. It promote the delivery of materials straight from the factory of the retain merchant, or from parts manufacturers directly to a large-scale factory such as an automobile assembly plant, without the use of warehouses.

However, recent developments in marketing have also led to the development of warehouse style retail stores with extremely high ceilings where decoration shelving is replaced by tall heavy duty industrial racks, with the items ready for sale being placed in the bottom parts of the racks and the created or parallel-borne and wrapped inventory items being usually placed in the top parts. In this way the same building is used both as a retail store and a warehouse.

The book”Distributional and Activities of Marketing” is written by Ezirim, Alloy Chinedu and was first published in 2002 by Kosoko press Limited in Owerri. And second Edition published in 2004 by Reliable Publishers. The book contained 472 pages and 20 chapters.
